The 2nd Annual Starfish Awards was nothing short of extraordinary—an evening filled with inspiration, community, and the heart of our event’s mission on full display.
Held on June 12th at The Reverie at The District in Chesterfield, MO, the event honored the remarkable individuals who go above and beyond every day to make a difference in the lives of students with disabilities in St. Louis County. From teachers and paraprofessionals to bus drivers and community leaders, each honoree embodies the spirit of the Starfish Parable, proving that even one small act of kindness can change a life.

Throughout the night, attendees heard moving words from our Starfish Award winners, each offering a window into their compassion and commitment.
One of our winners, Jamee Heidmann, a speech/language pathologist at Westridge Elementary School (Rockwood School District), said,
“My mission is simple But mighty, to ensure that every student I work with discovers their voice. That they learn their communication preferences. That they know they have a right to be understood—not just by their words, but by their intentions, their energy, their presence.”
Shunna Joshua, a beloved paraprofessional at Michelle Obama ECAC (Riverview Gardens School District), shared this observation during her speech,
“When your students leave your classroom, they’ll take a piece of you with them. Being a teacher is about so much more than facts, routines, and test scores. It’s about unlocking hearts. Practicing compassion. Modeling kindness, determination and grace. It’s about being human together.
"Nine months doesn’t feel like enough time to accomplish that, but time doesn’t limit the love you poured into your students. They feel it, long after they leave your classroom the last day of school.”
The evening also included a social hour with delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, beautiful and upbeat music by International Violinist Bell Darris, followed by a powerful awards presentation, including honoring SEF Board Member Carin Shulusky for her commitment to the foundation that spans over two decades!
