It was just another Tuesday morning when Ms. Reynolds, a local history teacher, noticed Liam sitting quietly at his desk, struggling to keep up with the class discussion. Liam, a special education student with auditory processing difficulties, often felt left behind in fast-paced conversations.
Recognizing his struggle, Ms. Reynolds started giving him written summaries of key points and checking in after lessons. Over time, Liam’s confidence soared, and he became an active participant in class discussions. It was a seemingly small act, but one that made all the difference in Liam’s learning experience.
Stories like Ms. Reynolds’s are the heart of the Special Education Foundation’s 2nd Annual Starfish Awards, and we are excited to share that our nomination period has now closed with an overwhelming 85 submissions!
This year, nominations came from all across St. Louis County and the Special School District Schools, recognizing the outstanding dedication of general education teachers, special education teachers, school support staff, and even local community members who have made a profound impact on students with disabilities.
Now, our Women Leaders group takes on the inspiring yet difficult task of reviewing each nomination to select eight incredible awardees who truly embody the spirit of making a difference.
Their work has just begun, not only in choosing our honorees but also in planning an unforgettable Starfish Awards event that will celebrate these outstanding individuals.
