Living the Five Graces

the five graces on gray background

As we close out the year, we’re taking a moment to pause, reflect, and share a message that continues to inspire us. For the past few years, we’ve ended the year by highlighting meaningful words from Gary Burnison, CEO of Korn Ferry and author of The Five Graces of Life and Leadership. His reflections offer a powerful lens through which to view both leadership and humanity.

Burnison reminds us that grace—much like truth, art, or love—is hard to define, yet unmistakable when we experience it. As we strive to be our best selves, he encourages us to draw inspiration from five graces: gratitude, resilience, aspiration, courage, and empathy. Together, these qualities form the foundation of meaningful leadership and compassionate living.

Gratitude grounds us. It invites us to reflect on the people, relationships, and shared experiences that shape who we are. When we take time to appreciate our collective journey—celebrating milestones, supporting one another through challenges, and honoring those we’ve lost—we gain perspective and purpose.

Resilience reminds us of the indomitable human spirit. Through the stories passed down by parents, grandparents, and mentors, we’re reminded that there is always a way forward. Resilience is the inner strength that carries us through adversity and propels us toward hope.

Aspiration is more than wishful thinking—it’s vision. It reflects who we are striving to become and the impact we hope to make. When we raise our sights and pursue meaningful goals, we elevate not only ourselves but those around us.

Courage is essential in times of change. It’s the willingness to let go of what’s familiar and reach for what’s next, even when the path forward feels uncertain. Courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear—it means moving forward guided by our values, even when we don’t have all the answers.

Empathy allows us to truly see and support others. It’s not just understanding someone else’s experience, but caring enough to act. True empathy is felt by others—it shows up in compassion, connection, and a commitment to help.

At the Special Education Foundation, these five graces are more than ideals—they are lived out every day through our mission to support students with disabilities. Gratitude for our community, resilience in the face of challenges, aspiration for brighter futures, courage to advocate for change, and empathy at the heart of all we do.
