Finding Joy This Holiday Season— Tips for Reducing Stress

The holidays are a magical time, filled with traditions, celebrations, and opportunities to give back. Maybe your favorite tradition is baking cookies with family, decorating the tree, or giving a meaningful gift. But for many, the season can also bring stress — between shopping, wrapping, cooking, and attending events, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

At the Special Education Foundation (SEF), we know the holidays can be challenging not just for families, but for students with disabilities and the educators who support them. This season, consider ways to lower stress while making a positive impact in the lives of students who need it most. Here are some tips to keep your holidays joyful and meaningful:

Lower Your Standards — Embrace Imperfection

Perfection is overrated. The holidays don’t have to look like a magazine spread or a perfect social media post. Whether it’s decorations, meals, or schedules, remember that the most important part of the season is connection and giving back.

Supporting others doesn’t have to be complicated — even small gestures, like creating a holiday card for someone special, or contributing to a holiday meal drive, makes a big difference.

Don’t Sweat the Little Stuff

Some things simply don’t matter in the grand scheme of the holidays. If a present isn’t wrapped perfectly or dinner runs a little late, it’s okay. What matters most is showing care and kindness.

Whether helping a teacher bring a creative classroom project to life, or ensuring students have the essential resources they need to succeed in school, these moments of giving and support create lasting impact.

Delegate Responsibilities — Share the Load

The holidays can feel overwhelming when we try to do everything ourselves. Share responsibilities with family, friends, or colleagues.

Consider involving students or community members in charitable activities. Delegating tasks reduces stress and allows more people to contribute to a meaningful experience.

Take Time to Relax — Care for Yourself

Amid all the giving and celebrating, don’t forget to care for yourself. Even a few minutes of quiet, reflection, or a relaxing activity can help you recharge. When you take care of yourself, you’re better able to support students, families, and other who rely on you for support.

The holidays don’t have to be stressful. By lowering expectations, focusing on what truly matters, sharing responsibilities, and making time to relax, you can enjoy a season of joy, peace, and giving.

Wishing you a happy holiday season from the Special Education Foundation.
