Last Friday evening, July 25th, was filled with community, compassion, and purpose, and the Special Education Foundation was honored to be one of the recipients of a generous donation from Andrew’s Hugs—an organization dedicated to supporting people with special needs and the groups that serve them.

At the gathering hosted by Friendship Brewing Company, Andrew’s Hugs distributed a total of $35,500 to organizations that are making a direct impact in the lives of individuals with disabilities. In addition to SEF, recipients included the Variety Club, Boone Center Inc. (BCI), Community Living, and a special needs cheer team—all working tirelessly to enhance opportunities, independence, and joy for people with disabilities.

SEF Board Member Annie Kuhl and Program & Communications Manager Shannon Benedek accepted the check on behalf of the Foundation

The evening was more than just a check presentation. It was a celebration of connection. Laughter, stories, and heartfelt appreciation were shared as supporters, staff, and friends gathered to honor the memory and mission of Andrew Norton—whose life and spirit continue to inspire acts of kindness and inclusion.

“We are so grateful to Andrew’s Hugs for believing in the work we do,” said Shannon Benedek, SEF’s Program & Communications Manager. “This support helps us provide critical resources to students with disabilities—whether it's scholarships, adaptive equipment, access to the arts, or life-changing programs like our Autism Independence Project.”

Andrew’s Hugs is a non‑profit organization founded in memory of Andrew Norton, who had Prader‑Willi Syndrome. His joy, kindness, and love of life inspired the foundation's work. Their mission aligns closely with SEF’s vision of empowering students served by the Special School District to reach their full potential.
