Since 2002, SEF’s Classroom Innovation Grants have filled a critical gap for educators working with students with disabilities—funding creative enrichment projects that go beyond what public-school budgets can support.
While typical IEP-related items should be covered by the district, these grants enable teachers to introduce engaging, research‑based enhancements—activities, experiences, sensory tools, technology aids, and curriculum enrichments that support inclusion, communication, motor skills, and social-emotional growth

Why they matter
- Expanding creative possibilities: Grants allow teachers to pilot innovative ideas that otherwise wouldn't be feasible.
- Enrichment, not essentials: Designed for “above‑and‑beyond” enhancements, not mandated therapeutic or assistive equipment.
- Enhanced engagement: Hands-on, sensory‑rich projects keep students motivated and focused.
- Skill-building beyond academics: Projects often target real-life skills—communication, self-regulation, collaboration.
- Amplified learning: When a class benefits, the approach can be shared district-wide, multiplying impact.
- Boosted teacher creativity: Educators feel supported to design truly student-centered innovations.
Lindsay Brefeld of Northview High School provided positive feedback on her Real World Readiness Project:
“Since implementing our functional living skills program, we have witnessed meaningful growth in several of our students, each with unique needs and challenges.
By incorporating hygiene practice into our functional living curriculum, along with using grant-funded visual schedules and materials, some students can complete these tasks independently and others needing some physical guidance. This progress has had a direct effect on their social interactions.”
