Camp is More Than a Getaway—It’s a Lifeline for Families of Children with Disabilities

For families of children with disabilities, school breaks can be a time of both joy and challenge. While most kids look forward to the freedom of summer, for parents of students served by the Special School District, those breaks often bring concern about how to maintain their child's progress—socially, emotionally, and developmentally. That's where camp steps in, and why the Special Education Foundation’s Kid-to-Camp program makes such a powerful difference.

Why Camp Matters

Camp isn’t just fun and games. For students with disabilities, it’s a meaningful extension of their education—supporting continued socialization, encouraging independence, and offering the consistent routines that many children need. It’s also a crucial opportunity for kids to build friendships, practice new skills, and boost their confidence in a supportive and structured environment.

These benefits don’t just help children—they support entire families. Camp can offer a much-needed break for caregivers, reducing stress and creating space for rest and renewal. That reprieve is essential, especially during the long summer months when resources are limited and routines are disrupted.

"If it weren’t for the campership, I  would not be able to send Aidan to  camp. He looks forward to camp every year.

He’s learned to ride a scooter for the first time and although it’s more of a struggle, he’s learning to play pickleball.

Your foundation is wonderful and I really appreciate you making this possible for him.” ~Happy Mom

Rising Costs, Greater Need

Unfortunately, tuition costs for summer camps have continued to rise, putting these valuable experiences out of reach for many families. That’s why SEF's Kid-to-Camp program is more important than ever.

Thanks to generous donors, SEF provides financial assistance to families so their children can attend area camps during school breaks. These "camperships" are awarded based on financial need and student benefit, helping bridge the gap where public funding falls short.

Join the Kid-to-Camp Challenge

This year, we’re launching the Kid-to-Camp Challenge—a call to our community to help us send more children with disabilities to camp. Whether it's $10 or $100, every dollar brings us closer to giving another child the chance to grow, learn, and play in a safe and nurturing camp environment.

Let’s give families peace of mind and kids the life-enriching experience they deserve.

To donate or learn more about how you can help, visit our website. Applications are accepted for summer, winter and spring breaks. Every child deserves an experience to remember—let’s make it happen together.
