This summer, the Special Education Foundation is launching new cohorts for the Autism Independence Project, a powerful initiative in partnership with iSocial. Designed to bridge the educational and social gap for students with autism, this program helps middle and high school students build the confidence, communication, and life skills they need to thrive.
What is iSocial?
iSocial is a virtual, group-based telehealth therapy program developed by Dr. Janine Stichter and colleagues at the Thompson Center for Autism at the University of Missouri. Its mission is simple: empower people with autism to lead independent lives filled with meaningful friendships and opportunities.
How It Works:
- Student Selection: Educators and parents identify students who would benefit from the program. Participants need internet access, verbal communication skills, and basic computer abilities.
- Program Format: Students join a group of six peers in 32 one-hour evening sessions held twice weekly over 16 weeks. Led by licensed professionals, sessions include interactive activities like role-play, video discussions, and contests.
- Proven Results: Backed by eight university studies, iSocial is proven to increase communication, improve social understanding, and boost emotional recognition.
“iSocial has made transitioning back to school the best ever. Please understand that for the first six weeks after school started, I would avoid scheduling any meetings for an hour after school got out. I knew I would always have an incident or an episode that I had to deal with after school. This year I haven’t had a single episode to contend with. This is 1,000% better!” ~Erin S., Mother
Students develop key life skills, such as:
- Recognizing facial expressions
- Sharing ideas
- Taking turns in conversations
- Understanding emotions
- Solving social problems
Spots are limited for our summer cohorts—don’t wait!
