On Tuesday, May 7, the Special Education Foundation proudly celebrated the graduation of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy Class of 2025 at the Emerson Auditorium inside St. Luke’s Hospital. The evening marked a significant milestone for this exceptional group of student leaders, whose journey through the program has been defined by growth, courage, and a commitment to making a difference in their communities.

Family members, teachers, SSD administrators, and SEF board members gathered to honor the students in a ceremony that was both heartfelt and inspiring. Each graduate was recognized for completing this year-long program designed to build leadership, confidence, communication, and advocacy skills among students with disabilities.

Throughout the evening, students shared personal reflections on their experiences in the Fred Saigh Leadership Program—choosing a specific word and speaking about how the program has empowered them to believe in themselves and their futures. They also spoke about friendships they’ve made and how being a participant in the program has helped them overcome challenges.

A highlight of the event was a special video presentation capturing memorable moments from the year—student-led activities, session trip photos, guest speakers, and team-building exercises. The video drew both laughter and tears from the audience, illustrating the deep bonds formed within the group.

The CJ Aubuchon Award: Honoring Leadership Through the Eyes of Peers

One of the most meaningful moments during the Fred Saigh Leadership Class of 2025 graduation ceremony was the presentation of the C.J. Aubuchon Award—an honor that holds special significance because it is chosen by the students themselves.

Congratulations to DJ Burks of Clayton High School and finalist Robbie Reed of Kirkwood High School! The recipient of this award is someone who consistently encouraged others, showed kindness in moments of challenge, and led by example through integrity and empathy.

Being chosen by their fellow classmates makes this recognition especially meaningful—it is a powerful reminder that leadership is not just about standing out, but about lifting others up. The award was presented by last year’s recipients of this award, Terrance Jones and Taylor Owens.

A Fond Farewell to Debbie Smith

Leadership Coordinator Debbie Smith has played a pivotal role in shaping what the Fred Saigh Leadership experience means to students, families, and staff. Her tireless efforts have created a supportive, empowering space where young leaders with disabilities have been able to grow, thrive, and find their voices. Many of this year’s graduates shared personal words of gratitude, recalling how Debbie encouraged them to take risks, speak up, and believe in themselves.

To honor Debbie and the opportunity to express their thanks, a special reception will be held on Wednesday, May 15, where friends, colleagues, students, and families are invited to stop by and wish her the very best in her next chapter. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives she’s touched and the strong foundation she’s built for the program’s future.

Thank you, Debbie, for your extraordinary leadership, compassion, and dedication. You will be deeply missed—but your impact will be felt for years to come.
