After 19 incredible years of unwavering dedication to the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, Leadership Coordinator Debbie Smith is preparing to retire. To honor her outstanding commitment to empowering students with disabilities, the Special Education Foundation will host an open-house style reception on May 15, celebrating her legacy of leadership, compassion, and impact.

At her final session with the 2024 Fred Saigh Leadership Academy class, Debbie led students on a memorable visit to The Little Bit Foundation, where they learned firsthand about community service and advocacy. The Little Bit Foundation works to remove barriers to education for under-resourced students by providing essential supplies and support services. Students were engaged and motivated by the Foundation’s mission and the Academy’s focus on leadership through service.

Later in the afternoon, in a joyful surprise, the Special Education Foundation's Executive Director Tim Eby and Program & Communications Manager Shannon Benedek recognized Debbie’s last official session with a presentation of flowers and a cookie cake. The moment was filled with smiles, laughter, and deep gratitude as students and staff celebrated Debbie’s tremendous influence on countless lives over nearly two decades.

On May 7, the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy will proudly celebrate the graduation of its outstanding Class of 2025. These remarkable students have spent the past year developing leadership skills, exploring community organizations, and growing into confident, compassionate leaders ready to make an impact.

Students will reflect on their transformational journeys, share highlights from their experiences, and celebrate the friendships and achievements they've built along the way. Families, school representatives, and community leaders will gather to honor their hard work, dedication, and leadership.

Each of these students leaves the program ready to bring positive change to their schools, communities, and beyond. We are so proud of their growth and cannot wait to see the amazing things they will accomplish!
