The Special Education Foundation (SEF) is excited to participate in Give STL Day on May 8, and early giving is already underway! This year, your donation can directly support a powerful new initiative: the Autism Independence Project, developed in partnership with iSocial.
Launched within the past year, the Autism Independence Project is SEF’s commitment to enhancing the independence and social success of students with autism served by the Special School District (SSD). With approximately 16.8% of SSD students diagnosed with autism, the need for targeted support has never been greater.
The heart of this initiative is iSocial, an engaging virtual group therapy program created by Dr. Janine Stichter and her team at the Thompson Center for Autism at the University of Missouri. Designed to boost social competence, iSocial delivers 32 one-hour evening sessions over 16 weeks, facilitated by licensed professionals. Students participate in small groups of six, connecting with peers through interactive role-playing, video discussions, and fun contests—all from the comfort of home.
This safe, structured environment helps students develop the social skills essential for building friendships, securing meaningful employment, and living more independently.
However, the full cost of the 16-week program—$3,200 per student—is a barrier for many families in St. Louis County. That’s where you come in.
Your Give STL Day donation can help eliminate that barrier.
SEF is committed to making the Autism Independence Project accessible to every student who needs it by providing full or partial scholarships. Your gift can directly impact a student’s future—helping them gain the confidence, connection, and skills to thrive both in and out of school.
Help us change lives. Make your Give STL Day donation today and support a brighter, more independent future for students with autism in our community.
Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities—one student at a time.
