Special Education Foundation Programs Supporting Students with Disabilities

The Special Education Foundation (SEF), a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to helping students with disabilities in St. Louis County achieve success in ways not supported by public funding. By offering a wide range of impactful programs, SEF fills critical gaps, ensuring students receive the resources and opportunities they need to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

Critical Needs Program: Immediate Support for Students

SEF’s Critical Needs Program is always open to applications, providing immediate funding for essential items and services that directly benefit individual students. These needs often arise suddenly and require swift action—whether it’s specialized equipment, educational resources, or urgent personal items—to ensure students can continue their education without disruption.

Adaptive & Assistive Equipment: Tools for Independence

Thanks to a generous grant from the Tilles Foundation, SEF funds Adaptive and Assistive Equipment for students served by the Special School District (SSD). This includes not only augmentative communication devices but also other types of equipment and technology that support independence, boost confidence, and promote success beyond the classroom.

Applications are accepted year-round, with teachers initiating the process and parents completing the second step to ensure a full picture of the student’s needs.

Autism Independence Project: Building Life Skills with iSocial

In partnership with the iSocial program—developed by experts at the Thompson Center for Autism—SEF supports students on the autism spectrum through the Autism Independence Project. This remote group therapy initiative focuses on improving social competence and life skills, enabling individuals with autism to pursue lives filled with independence, employment, and lasting friendships. Applications are accepted year-round and applicants are placed in a cohort of 6 like-minded students.

Fred Saigh Leadership Academy: Cultivating Future Leaders

Applications are currently open (extended through April 18, 2025) for the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, a transformative experience that expands student horizons through community engagement and leadership development. SSD teachers nominate students for the program, and both a teacher nomination and student application are required to apply. Supported by The Saigh Foundation, the Academy equips students with leadership and social skills that will serve them well into adulthood, fostering a spirit of service and self-confidence.

Kid-to-Camp: Summer Growth and Connection

SEF’s Kid-to-Camp Program helps students maintain social and educational momentum during extended school breaks. These experiences offer opportunities for students with disabilities to develop social skills, gain confidence, and enjoy meaningful recreational experiences that support their growth in fun, inclusive settings. Applications are now open for the summer session.

How to Apply for SEF Programs

All SEF applications are hosted through the Submittable platform, where applicants will create a secure account to submit and track the status of their applications. Visit our website to view all applications and deadlines. For assistance with the application process or additional information, contact SEF’s Program & Communications Manager Shannon Benedek at shannon@sef-stl.org.

Whether it’s through adaptive technology, leadership opportunities, or camperships, the Special Education Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to empower students with disabilities and remove barriers to success. Each program reflects SEF’s unwavering commitment to creating brighter futures for every student it serves.
