The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy (FSLA) is more than just a leadership program—it is a transformative journey that opens doors to new possibilities. Participants develop critical communication, problem-solving, and advocacy skills that will serve them well in their academic and professional futures.
As a participant in the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, DJ Burks of Clayton High School is an excellent example of how his skills have prepared him for his future success. He has been recognized with the Zander Award for his unwavering perseverance, dedication, and leadership. DJ consistently pushes himself to excel both academically and athletically. His commitment to learning, willingness to seek support, and reliability in giving back to his school community set him apart as a true leader.
"Whether in the classroom or managing the scoreboard, DJ approaches every challenge with focus and determination." ~ Steve Hutson, Athletic Director, Clayton High School, School District of Clayton
“DJ is a delight to have in the FSLA. While sitting in class, he is quiet and mild mannered, kind and considerate to everyone in the group. DJ will raise his hand to contribute and has an 'on point' comment that is 'on target' and makes me smile. He has a great sense of humor, uses it at appropriate times and is a wonderful asset to the leadership program. Throughout the year, DJ has blossomed and is moving in the right direction to do great things!” ~Debbie Smith, Fred Saigh Leadership Coordinator, Special Education Foundation
Preston Priest is making impressive strides in leadership and creativity. Now a sophomore at Parkway West High School, he has shown remarkable dedication to his school and community. As a freshman, he was elected Vice President of the Deaf Teen Club, and this year, he has stepped up as President. Under his leadership, the Club received a $300 donation from the proceeds of the Academy’s annual car wash—a testament to his commitment to making a difference.
Beyond leadership, Preston has cultivated a passion for origami, turning his artistry into a true success. At last weekend’s Deaf Visual Artists Festival, he showcased his incredible talent, selling over 40 of his handmade origami sculptures.
“In 2022, I was staying home and isolating because I had Covid.” stated Priest. “I decided to challenge myself and make a new origami sculpture. I worked hard at it and it turned out and after that, I started making more challenging origami sculptures and more of a variety of different things. I have made peacocks, octopuses, foxes, cats, panda bears, the Eiffel Tower, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, and much more. At Last weekend’s event and during the awards ceremony, I won an award for the Best Booth!”
“During our leadership events, Preston leads by example. He is kind and caring, is always positive and smiling. Preston never hesitates to participate and is a true pleasure to be with. It will be exciting to see the successes that Preston will have in the future!” ~Debbie Smith, Fred Saigh Leadership Coordinator, Special Education Foundation
Shaping Future Leaders and Extending Opportunities
The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy is transforming the way students with disabilities develop leadership skills by providing them with unique, community-related opportunities that extend far beyond the traditional classroom environment. This groundbreaking program selects up to 20 high school students each year, focusing on nurturing their leadership potential and equipping them with the skills and experiences necessary to make a lasting impact on their schools and communities.
To ensure that more students have the opportunity to participate in this life-changing program, the deadline to apply has been extended to April 18. This extension allows additional students to take advantage of this incredible leadership development experience.
A Year of Growth and Leadership Development
The academy's year-long curriculum is carefully crafted to introduce, foster, and develop essential leadership skills. Students engage in a series of training sessions that not only teach them how to lead but also immerse them in real-world issues facing their communities. This hands-on approach ensures that participants not only learn theoretical concepts but also understand how to apply these concepts in practical, impactful ways.
Each month, students take a day to visit and explore key sites and locations throughout the metropolitan area. These visits are more than just educational field trips—they are carefully planned experiences that expose students to the institutions and leaders that drive the community's success. Through these experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of civic engagement, professional environments, and the various roles they can play in shaping their communities.
If you know a student who would benefit from this program, encourage them to apply before the extended deadline of April 18. This is a chance to be part of an exclusive group of young leaders who are committed to making a difference. Don’t miss this opportunity to join a program that is changing lives and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
