As we continue coordinating the surprises for our eight incredible winners of the 2nd Annual Starfish Awards, we are excited to begin sharing some of the special honorees who will be recognized at this year’s event. The Starfish Awards celebrate those who make a profound impact in the lives of students with disabilities receiving services from the Special School District (SSD) of St. Louis County. While we are keeping most of our honorees a surprise for now, we are ready to announce two recipients of our SEF Board Starfish Awards.
These individuals exemplify what it means to make a difference, and we can’t wait to celebrate them with you on Thursday, June 12 at The Reverie in Chesterfield, MO.
Debbie Smith – Spirit of SEF Starfish Award
The Spirit of SEF Starfish Award is given to an individual whose dedication, passion, and service have left a lasting impact on students with disabilities and the mission of the Special Education Foundation. This award recognizes someone who embodies the heart and soul of SEF, tirelessly advocating for students and going above and beyond to make a difference.
This year, we are honored to present this award to Debbie Smith, whose leadership and unwavering support have played a crucial role in shaping the success of SEF. Debbie’s dedication to our students and families, her ability to bring people together in support of our mission, and her selfless service to the foundation make her the perfect recipient of this award. Through her work, she has created opportunities, strengthened programs, and ensured that students with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive.
We are proud to present this award to Debbie Smith, current Fred Saigh Leadership Program Coordinator.
Mary Lee Burlemann – Community Starfish Award
The Community Starfish Award recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed to fostering inclusion, advocacy, and opportunities for students with disabilities within the broader community. This award is given to someone whose commitment extends beyond the walls of a classroom or an organization and into the larger community, helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
We are proud to present this award to Mary Lee Burlemann, current Fred Saigh Leadership Program and Dan McLaughlin Charity Golf Tournament and Auction Volunteer.
