The Special Education Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive in school and beyond. One of the most impactful ways SEF assists students is by addressing their audiology and vision needs through our Adaptive & Assistive Equipment program. By providing critical resources and funding, SEF helps ensure that students served by the Special School District (SSD) have the tools necessary to access and participate fully in and beyond the classroom.
Audiology Support
For students with hearing impairments, access to proper audiology services is essential for communication, learning, and social development. SEF collaborates with SSD to provide financial assistance for hearing aids, FM systems, and other assistive listening devices that enhance auditory input. These tools help students hear their teachers, peers, and environmental sounds more clearly, allowing them to engage more effectively in the classroom. Early support can significantly improve speech development, literacy skills, and overall academic achievement for students with hearing impairments.
“Because of your program, I was able to receive a new pair of hearing aids after mine broke. They really help me in school and with other programs I attend. The hearing aids I got have a bluetooth connection which makes watching TV and talking on the phone easier. Thank you SEF!” ~Mackenzie
Vision Assistance
Clear vision is fundamental to learning, and SEF works to remove barriers for students with visual impairments. In partnership with Mercy Optical, SEF provides funding for prescription eyeglasses and specialized lenses.
By offering financial support for these essential items, SEF ensures that students can see their textbooks, digital screens, and classroom materials clearly, preventing unnecessary academic struggles.
Applying for Assistance
Students aged 3-21 years who have a disability and are served by the Special School District (SSD) are eligible to apply for assistance through our Adaptive & Assistive Equipment program. Applications are accepted year-round to ensure that students receive timely support. SSD educators/audiologists initiate the application process on behalf of students, and financial need is a key factor in determining eligibility.
Making a Lasting Impact
Through our programs, SEF plays a vital role in helping students overcome challenges that might otherwise hinder their academic progress. The foundation’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity ensures that all students, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to succeed. That being said, private donors play a crucial role in making this initiative a success, ensuring that every student has access to the tools necessary to succeed in and out of the classroom.
