The Special Education Foundation has established a partnership with iSocial with the Autism Independence Project, a program dedicated to helping students with disabilities improve independence, develop social skills, and expand their aspirations for a meaningful life.
What is iSocial?
Developed by Dr. Janine Stichter and her team at the University of Missouri’s Thompson Center for Autism, iSocial is a remote group therapy program proven to help individuals with autism lead more independent lives. By focusing on critical social competence skills, iSocial equips participants with tools for meaningful employment and lasting friendships.
How the Program Works
- Student Identification
Middle and high school students are identified through educators and parents based on their needs and interests. Eligible students should have internet access, basic computer skills, and verbal communication abilities. - 32 Evening Sessions Over 16 Weeks
Groups of six like-minded students participate in twice-weekly, one-hour telehealth sessions led by licensed professionals. These interactive workshops include role-playing, contests, and video discussions, making learning fun and engaging. - Skill Development Focus
The program hones essential skills, such as:- Recognizing facial expressions
- Sharing ideas
- Turn-taking in conversations
- Understanding feelings and emotions
- Problem-solving
“Previously, Jaedon had difficulty siting in the classroom with his peers, preferring to stay outside. Now, he proudly sits in the classroom and even responds to some of his classmates’ questions and comments. This change has made a world of difference in his daily experience at school.” ~Aneicia J., Mother
