There’s just one week remaining to support SEF’s Critical Needs Coat Drive, an annual campaign to provide warm winter coats for students with disabilities in the St. Louis region. We’re partnering with the Special School District to ensure students stay warm and safe this winter—but we need your help to reach our goal!
Why It Matters
Around one in five children in our region lives in poverty, lacking access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. When temperatures drop, these students are especially vulnerable to illness and injury. For students with disabilities, a winter coat can mean so much more than warmth.
- Comfort and Sensory Needs: Some students have sensitivities to certain textures, and a soft, comfortable coat can reduce sensory discomfort.
- Body Temperature Regulation: Many students need extra help regulating their body temperature. The right coat provides warmth without causing overheating.
- Independence: A coat that’s easy to put on and take off empowers students with disabilities to feel more independent.
- Inclusion: A warm coat allows students to participate in outdoor activities, promoting social interaction and physical health.
- Safety: Coats with bright colors or reflective strips improve visibility in low-light conditions, helping prevent accidents.
- Focus: When students are warm and comfortable, they can focus on learning and engaging with their peers.
