The Special Education Foundation proudly celebrated its 40th anniversary during the 2024 fiscal year, a milestone made possible by the unwavering support of our donors, friends, and partners throughout the St. Louis region. This past year marked a period of growth and innovation as we launched new programs and hosted events that spotlighted individuals transforming the lives of students with disabilities in St. Louis County.
Making a Difference for Over 8,000 Students
Through our wide range of programs, SEF positively impacted over 8,000 students receiving special education services in St. Louis County. Two exciting initiatives debuted this year, expanding our support and opportunities for students.
Introducing the Autism Independence Project and SEF Presents!
The Autism Independence Project, made possible through a generous grant from the Charles W. Frees & Jean H. Frees Foundation and in partnership with iSocial, is a pilot program designed to help students with disabilities served by the Special School District improve their independence by increasing their social skills and expanding their meaningful life aspirations. Early feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, setting a hopeful tone for the program’s future.
Meanwhile, SEF Presents!, a new initiative under our Arts in the Classroom program presented by Emerson, brought music, dance, and theater performances to Special School District schools. With support from donors during 2024’s Give STL Day, these performances inspired and delighted hundreds of students at Ackerman, Litzsinger, Neuwoehner, and Southview schools. Thanks to additional funding from the Regional Arts Commission, SEF Presents will expand in 2025 to include more schools and new arts partners.
Looking Ahead: The Mobility Project
SEF launched the Mobility Project with our Fund-the Need at this year’s Dan McLaughlin Charity Golf Tournament and Auction, an initiative aimed at enhancing independence and improving interaction with the environment and peers for students with physical disabilities. This program underscores our ongoing commitment to empowering students with diverse needs. We raised enough funds to provide 2 power wheelchairs for the SSD schools for students to learn to use them.
Celebrating Success Through Events
SEF’s events in 2024 not only raised funds but also heightened awareness of our mission. The 22nd annual Dan McLaughlin Charity Golf Tournament and Auction, held in October 2024, achieved its second-highest fundraising total in our history, raising more than $336,000.
A highlight of the year was our new event, the Starfish Awards, held at CITYPARK Stadium in June 2024. This inspiring evening recognized eight educators and three community leaders for their exceptional contributions to the education of students with disabilities. The event was a powerful reminder of the impact these individuals have on students’ lives.
Gratitude for Our Community
We extend heartfelt thanks to our Board of Directors for their leadership and our dedicated staff for their tireless commitment to our mission. Their support has made a profound difference in the lives of countless students. We are also deeply grateful to the Women Leaders and the Special School District of St. Louis County for their unwavering partnership and dedication to helping students reach their full potential.
Thank You for 40 Amazing Years!
As we reflect on 40 years of service, we thank you for your continued support. Together, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of students with disabilities, and we look forward to building on our programs and events in the years to come.
