Teachers often go above and beyond to create enriching experiences for students with disabilities, and SEF’s Classroom Innovation Grants program is here to help. Since 2002, this initiative has provided funding to bring creative projects to life, empowering teachers and enriching education.
Last year, SEF awarded $65,000 in grants to 89 teachers, supporting impactful projects like Ellen Birch and Jason Bentancourt’s Gingerbread House Fun project at Ackerman. “Students were able to use their imagination to build their gingerbread house using sweet treats, and were so excited to take them home to share with their families,” stated Birch. “This project provided students with opportunities to practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They were also able to practice their social skills by talking to each other, providing compliments, and words of encouragement.”
The Classroom Innovation Grants program empowers teachers to create and implement innovative projects that make a meaningful difference for students with disabilities. By providing financial support, the Special Education Foundation helps educators bring their creative ideas to life, offering enriching learning opportunities that might not otherwise be possible. These projects not only transform individual classrooms but also serve as replicable models for other educational settings, extending their impact across the community.
