Do you know someone who goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of special education students?
The Special Education Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2nd Annual Starfish Awards, and the deadline is quickly approaching! Submit your nomination by Friday, December 20, to recognize a remarkable individual making a difference in the lives of students served by the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD).
The Starfish Awards celebrate individuals who embody the essence of the Starfish Story. Just as the young child in the story returned starfish to the sea one by one, believing each act mattered, these honorees make a difference— one student, one moment, and one act of kindness at a time.
Here are examples of last year’s nominees, shared by those who saw their incredible impact firsthand:
Mary Reich-Hernandez: Special Education Teacher, Michelle Obama ECAC
"Mary put a student and their family in touch with The Variety Club, connecting them to essential resources for medical items and camps. This student has become one of the faces of Variety Club promotions, gained a bed to ensure their safety, and participated in many life-changing camps."
Kari Frazier: Art Teacher, Barretts Elementary
"Kari has adapted art lessons so that all students can participate and complete projects. Even for students with the biggest challenges, she ensures they can create art and be included like their peers. Her inclusive and innovative teaching is simply amazing."
David Peterson: Law Enforcement Instructor, North Tech
"I can’t say enough good things about Mr. Peterson and his program. He teaches these kids what real life will be like after school, instilling respect, admiration, and the tools to make better judgments. In a time when law enforcement faces skepticism, he shows students a different path—leading with compassion and teaching them how to make a difference in a world that often needs care and hope."
Each nominee exemplifies the idea that even small acts can have an immeasurable impact, creating ripples of hope and change that reach far and wide.
Don’t miss the chance to honor someone who makes a difference every day. Submit your nomination today and celebrate those making a difference for students with disabilities.
