The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy class held their November session last Friday with the Florissant Police Department and with the Starkloff Disability Institute. The visits centered around cyberbullying with the Florissant Police Department and learning to write a resume presented by Starkloff.
In the morning, the students learned about cyberbullying and were presented with power point discussion delivered by Florissant Police officers.
Cyberbullying refers to the use of digital platforms, such as social media, messaging apps, gaming forums, or other online spaces, to harass, threaten, embarrass, or harm someone. The students learned that it can take many forms, including:
- Spreading rumors or false information: Posting or sharing harmful or untrue content about someone to damage their reputation.
- Sending threatening messages: Directly attacking or intimidating someone through private or public messages.
- Impersonation: Pretending to be someone else to post damaging content or interact negatively with others.
- Public humiliation: Sharing private, embarrassing, or compromising photos, videos, or information without consent.
- Exclusion: Intentionally leaving someone out of an online group or activity to isolate them.
Students received a tour of the facility which included the holding cells and Women’s Detention area. During the visit, the students experienced a real 911 call that came into dispatch and explored the latest technologies used in tracking calls and locations.
To end the day, the students also met with Starkloff Disability Institute to learn how to write resumes and cover letters. They practiced writing their own resumes following the presentation.
Starkloff aims to help both youth and adults with disabilities prepare for their professional life.
Upon completion of this program, participants return to their schools equipped with the tools and confidence to take charge of initiatives, campaign for school offices, and lead impactful projects. Their journey will culminate in a memorable graduation ceremony where students have the opportunity to reflect on their growth, share their most impactful experiences, and celebrate their achievements with peers, mentors, and loved ones.
