The Special Education Foundation’s Fred Saigh Leadership Academy is designed to build essential leadership skills through immersive training sessions. Students with disabilities served by the Special School District selected to participate in this program learn both the theory and practical application of leadership by tackling real-world community issues.
Last month, the students visited the St. Louis County Buzz Westfall Justice Center located in downtown Clayton. This is the only jail in the entire state of Missouri that has accreditation. Accreditation Manager Officer Banes, conducts the tour each year for the students. The students learn what life is like inside the jail, daily schedules for the inmates, and see various locations inside.
Raijah James of Affton High School reflected on her experience:
“Our recent leadership trip to the jail was fun and very eye opening! I loved how we got to experience a real jail, and how they live! But I also loved seeing the inmates get treated and how they get help on trying to turn their life around. It was a beautiful thing to see.
Thank you Officer Banes for being such an amazing leader and your direction! You showed great leadership skills such as truthful, organized, considerate, professional, respectful, knowledgeable, honest, and helpful. I was amazed by you the whole time; you did an amazing job.”
Noelle Grace McSpadden of Parkway West High School also commented:
“The positive thing about the jail was that I got to see all of the things that the prisoners did. We were fascinated about what they wore. I was surprised that they would listen to music. I had a blast. I was a little scared, but it was a fun time.”
As part of this session the students also visited the Government Center and met with County Executive Sam Page. As County Executive, Page is committed to transforming our community into a place of health, safety, and opportunity, where every resident can thrive.
He shared his leadership experience with the students, advising them to practice patience and to surround themselves with people with diverse skills.
The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy offers a life-changing experience that empowers students with disabilities to become active leaders in their schools and communities. Through this program, the Special Education Foundation fosters inclusion and helps students realize their potential.
