Nominations are now open for the next class of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, a program to empower high school students with disabilities. Each year, up to 20 students are selected to participate in a year-long leadership development program that offers hands-on experiences and community engagement beyond the classroom. Through monthly site visits and leadership training, students gain the skills and confidence to take on leadership roles in their schools and communities.
The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy offers students with disabilities a life-changing opportunity to gain leadership skills and confidence. It empowers them to take on active roles in their schools and communities, fostering a sense of purpose and possibility. By helping these students realize their full potential, the Academy supports a more inclusive community. Teacher Nominations and Student Applications for the 2025-2026 class are open through February 21, 2025
Nominations are also open for the John Cary Scholarship, a $5,000 award established in 2016 to honor the late John Cary, former superintendent of the Special School District of St. Louis County. This scholarship recognizes graduating students who receive services from SSD and plan to attend a four-year college, university, or trade school.
The ideal candidates will demonstrate resilience, courage, and determination—qualities John Cary admired. Academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and success in athletics or the arts are all considered, along with financial need and teacher recommendations. Teacher Nominations and Student Applications for the 2025-2026 school year are open through January 24, 2025.
