Every day, the school's custodian Mark passed by Liam's classroom. Liam, who had autism, often found the crowded hallways overwhelming, retreating to a quiet corner by the gym. Mark noticed this pattern and, one day, as he swept the gym floor, he approached Liam quietly.
"Hey, you like to be here alone, don't you?" Mark asked, his voice gentle.
Liam didn't respond but looked up with a nod.
From then on, Mark made sure to clean the gym during Liam's break times, giving him space but also a calm presence nearby. Slowly, Liam began to offer Mark a smile or a wave. One day, he even helped hold the dustpan.
It wasn’t much, but for Liam, feeling safe in that space was a victory. Mark never needed a thank-you; knowing he made Liam's day a little easier was enough. He may not have changed the world, but he made a difference in Liam’s world.
The Special Education Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2nd Annual Starfish Awards! This special event, to be held in June 2025, celebrates the unsung heroes within the Special School District who make a difference in the lives of students with disabilities—one small act at a time.
We invite you to submit nominations for anyone who has gone above and beyond to support our students, whether they are special education teachers, general education teachers, paraprofessionals, SSD staff, or other members of the SSD community. These individuals are the "starfish savers" who, with patience, compassion, and dedication, create meaningful change in the lives of our students every day.
If you know someone who has made a lasting impact, no matter how big or small, we want to hear their story! Together, we can celebrate the incredible work happening across our schools.
Submit your nomination today and help us recognize those making a difference—one student at a time.
