Last week marked the start of SEF's Critical Needs Coat Drive, in which we partner with the Special School District to raise money to buy coats for students this winter.
This annual campaign to help keep our students warm in winter is vital as around one in five children in our region lives in poverty. That means they don’t have access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. And when the temperature drops, they are especially vulnerable to illness and injury.
That’s why, every fall, we ask the community to donate so we can buy coats for kids this month.
It goes without saying that coats are essential for everyone in winter in the St. Louis region. But they can be particularly important for students with disabilities.
For example, some students may have sensitivities to certain textures. A soft, comfortable coat can help reduce sensory discomfort.
Also, many of our students may need help regulating their body temperature. A coat can provide warmth when needed and prevent overheating.
A coat for a student with a disability is also a statement of independence. A coat that is easy to put on and take off can help students with disabilities feel more independent and in control.
A warm jacket can also allow students to participate in outdoor activities, promoting social interaction and physical health.
Coats can protect students from the elements, such as cold weather and rain, reducing the risk of illness. It’s also worth noting that coats with bright colors or reflective strips can improve visibility, especially in low-light conditions, helping to prevent accidents.
Finally, a comfortable coat can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing students to focus on learning and socializing.
Won’t you help bring that feeling of comfort and warmth that a new coat can give a student, boosting their self-esteem and confidence?
By donating, you help provide coats for students with disabilities, ensuring their comfort, safety, and overall well-being this winter.
