The Special Education Foundation (SEF) is collaborating with iSocial with the Autism Independence Project. SEF is dedicated to supporting students with disabilities in the Special School District by fostering greater independence, enhancing social skills, and helping students achieve meaningful life goals.
What is iSocial? iSocial is a remote group therapy program focused on improving social competence, developed by Dr. Janine Stichter and her team at the Thompson Center for Autism at the University of Missouri. The program aims to transform the lives of individuals with autism, enabling them to live independently, build meaningful careers, and form lasting friendships. iSocial uses telehealth to deliver group therapy, helping both children and adults develop vital life skills.
Jaedon, a student at Parkway Central High School, has been positively impacted by participating the Autism Independence Project:
“Before Jaedon was part of the Autism Independence Project, he preferred sitting outside the classroom. Now, he confidently joins his classmates and even responds to their questions. What a major milestone in his social development!” ~Aniecia, mother
How It Works
Student Identification: The needs and interests of middle and high school students are identified by educators and parents. To participate, eligible students must have internet access and be able to perform basic computer tasks with verbal communication skills.
32 One-Hour Evening Sessions over 16 Weeks: Led by licensed professionals, small groups of six like-minded students engage in fun, interactive workshops that include role-play, contests, and video discussions. These sessions take place two evenings a week for 16 weeks, offering a supportive and engaging environment.
Results: Backed by eight university studies, this program has proven to be effective, with students reporting an enjoyable and inclusive experience. The results show improvements in communication skills and increased social motivation.
