Saturday, August 17 was an exciting morning for the students selected to participate in this year’s Fred Saigh Leadership Academy (FSLA). They came together at Special School District’s Central Office for a getting acquainted event hosted by FLSA Coordinator Debbie Smith.

Accompanied by SEF staff and special guests, students, parents, and teachers gathered to connect, learn about the Academy's program, and engaged in ice-breaker and bonding activities. SEF Executive Director Tim Eby gave a warm welcome to the group encouraging the students, with respect to Ted Lasso, to “be curious” and offered seven steps for the students to consider on their leadership journey:

1. Ask Questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

2. Go Down Rabbit Holes. Allow your curiosity to guide you.

3. Listen.

4. Look at Stuff, Not On Your Phone.

5. Write Things Down.

6. Memorize Knowledge.

7. Let Go of the Need to Be Right.

SEF provided each student with a decorative “Proud home of a Fred Saigh Leadership Academy Student Class of 2025” sign to proudly display at their residence as shown above.

This year, 16 high school students from across St. Louis County have been selected to participate in a year of training. The curriculum introduces, fosters and develops leadership skills and involves the students in issues that face the community. At the completion of the program, the students return to their respective schools equipped to campaign for school offices, manage school projects and assume leadership positions. The program ends with a graduation ceremony where the students share their most memorable experiences and how the program has impacted their lives.

The selected students take one day each month to visit and explore key sites/locations and meet leaders throughout the metropolitan area. The program exposes the students to the institutions that make our community vital and effective in meeting the needs of its citizens.

On September 13, the students will meet for their first session centered around “What is leadership?” and will visit the Town & Country Municipal Center. They will also host an annual Car Wash on Saturday, September 21.  View the Schedule of Events for the 2024-2025 school year.

We look forward to a great year ahead! The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy is not just about developing future leaders; it is about empowering students with disabilities to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
