Over the last ten years or so, the staff at the Special School District schools (Ackerman, Litsinger, Neuwoehner High, Northview High, and Southview) have fueled a powerful tradition of friendly competition through the Missouri Lottery Raffle Ticket Sales Competition, raising critical funds for the annual Dan McLaughlin Charity Golf Tournament and Auction.
Each year, this competition has been a force for good—uniting team captains, staff, and supporters alike as they rally behind a common cause: providing life-changing opportunities for students with disabilities served by the Special School District.
But beyond the excitement of vying for bragging rights and the coveted Red Apple Trophy, this competition serves a much deeper purpose. The funds raised through this event have a direct impact on the lives of our students—helping to provide access to specialized resources, adaptive equipment, and programs that foster independence, confidence, and success.
Thanks to the dedication of our SSD teams, the money raised in previous years has allowed students to participate in experiences that enrich their lives in ways that go beyond the classroom. From providing scholarships and funding for innovative educational programs to supporting critical services like therapy and job readiness training, these efforts help ensure that our students have the tools they need to thrive inside the classroom and beyond.
This year, we’re excited to take our fundraising efforts to the next level with a new approach. Instead of selling MO Lotto Raffle tickets, we are now offering a virtual Discount Card through Vertical Raise. Each discount card ($25) offers valuable savings on dining, entertainment, shopping, and services, allowing supporters to benefit while continuing to contribute to a cause that directly benefits our students and educators. These cards not only offer incredible value locally but can also be used anywhere in the country, making it easier for friends, family, and supporters from all over to join us in our mission.
By expanding our reach and involving a broader community of supporters, the Special Education Foundation has the opportunity to raise even more funds for the students who need it most. Every dollar raised helps us empower students to achieve their full potential, whether it’s through advancing their education, building life skills, or preparing them for future employment opportunities.
While we will always cherish the origin of the Red Apple Trophy and the SSD Schools Competition, this year’s new approach offers us an exciting opportunity to broaden our reach and amplify our impact. Let’s come together once again, rallying behind our students with the same enthusiasm and determination that has defined this competition for years.
