Classroom Innovation Grants - Making a Difference One Student at a Time

Teachers of children with disabilities have unique insights into effective teaching methods tailored to their students' needs. However, financial limitations often hinder their ability to implement enhanced projects, as regulated tax dollars may not cover all costs. Recognizing this gap, the Special Education Foundation has been providing support since 2002, ensuring that innovative educational initiatives can thrive where public funding falls short.

Rachel Blake, a teacher of the Vocational Skills Program, was awarded a Classroom Innovation Grant for her Smoothies for Wellness project.

“The students learned skills related to employability skills for food preparation,” stated Blake.

“The deep freezer also provided opportunities for students to expand their smoothie menu to start having monthly featured recipes  due to increased frozen food storage space. Through this process of expanding the menu, interns have had the opportunity to learn how to research recipes and make choices about the flavors they will offer on their menu. This ownership in their work has created a sense of belonging and encouraged and motivated students at the office.”

The Classroom Innovation Grant program enables teachers to develop and implement creative projects that significantly impact students with disabilities. By offering financial assistance, the Foundation helps educators bring their innovative ideas to life, creating enriching learning experiences that might otherwise be impossible. These projects not only benefit the immediate classroom but also serve as models that can be replicated in other educational settings, amplifying their impact.

Eligibility and Preferences:

  • Projects must be innovative and capable of being replicated in other venues.
  • The Foundation does not fund items that should be covered by public funds, such as books and equipment, transportation, or staff development.

Reporting Requirements:

  • Teachers are required to report their project results the following year by completing the Feedback Form.
