Creating Summer Memories with Kid-to-Camp Program

SEF knows how important it is to bridge the instructional gap during school breaks. Our Kid-to-Camp program provides financial assistance to families served by the Special School District, allowing their children to attend camp during these crucial breaks.

Attending camp can provide numerous benefits for students with disabilities, enhancing their personal growth, social skills, and independence. Here are some key advantages:

  • Social Interaction: Camps offer a unique environment for children to interact with peers in a more relaxed setting than school. This can help students with disabilities build friendships and develop social skills.
  • Confidence Building: Successfully participating in camp activities can boost a child's self-esteem and confidence. Overcoming challenges in a supportive environment helps children realize their capabilities.
  • Independence: Being away from home allows students to develop independence by making decisions, trying new activities, and learning to manage their daily needs with appropriate support.
  • Skill Development: Camps often offer various activities that help children develop new skills or improve existing ones, from arts and crafts to sports and teamwork exercises.
  • Emotional Growth: Camp experiences can help children express their emotions, understand their feelings, and develop coping strategies in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Physical Activity: Many camps provide opportunities for physical exercise, which can be particularly beneficial for children with disabilities, promoting health and well-being.
  • Sense of Belonging: Specialized camps for children with disabilities create an inclusive atmosphere where children feel understood and accepted, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Learning New Perspectives: Camps can introduce children to diverse perspectives and encourage empathy and understanding by interacting with campers from different backgrounds.
  • Resilience: The camp environment encourages children to try new things and face challenges, which can foster resilience and adaptability.

“The camp we chose was a fantastic fit for my son. The staff were amazing - incredibly empathetic, knowledgeable, and had great ideas for ways to support my child with a variety of challenges. We are still using some of those strategies now and I've passed them along to his school teachers. I loved it because he felt safe and supported there and I didn't have to worry about him while he was away. The staff communicated very well and were always available to talk if my son was having an issue.  I'm grateful SEF was able to help me as a single full-time, working mom.”

While these experiences are invaluable, the cost of attending camp can be a financial burden for many families. That's where SEF steps in. We provide "campership" funds to cover areas not supported by tax dollars or the United Way. These funds are awarded based on financial need and the benefits to the student, with many raised through our annual golf tournament.

We accept Kid-to-Camp applications year-round. To learn more about eligibility requirements and to submit an application, visit our website.

By providing a supportive and inclusive environment, camps can significantly enhance the development and well-being of students with disabilities, making a lasting impact on their lives.
