Enhancing Education with Tools for Success

The Special Education Foundation (SEF) plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities within the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD). SEF continuously reviews funding requests for specialized equipment and other needs for students with disabilities.

The Foundation's mission is to enhance education, independence, and the quality of life for students served by SSD. Our Adaptive & Assistive Equipment program provides essential tools to help empower students to overcome challenges and reach new heights. Here are some of the ways we help:

  • Augmentative Communication Devices: These tools empower students who face challenges with verbal communication. Augmentative communication devices can include speech-generating devices, communication boards, or apps that facilitate expressive communication.
  • Adaptive Equipment: SEF supports students by providing specialized equipment tailored to their unique needs. This may include mobility aids (such as wheelchairs or walkers), seating solutions, or other devices that enhance independence and accessibility.
  • Technology Items: SEF recognizes the importance of technology in education. Students receive access to technology tools like tablets, laptops, or software designed to accommodate their learning styles and abilities.
  • Audiology Devices and Eyeglasses: SEF ensures that students with hearing or vision impairments have access to audiology devices (such as hearing aids) and eyeglasses. These essential items contribute to a better learning experience and quality of life.

Thanks to a grant from the Tilles Foundation, the Special Education Foundation can provide specialized equipment to students up to 21 years old who are completing their final year with the Special School District and transitioning out of school.

Currently, adaptive equipment used by students remains with SSD when they graduate or age out of the District. Many students entering the workforce face the challenge of purchasing expensive equipment necessary for communication and daily management. This grant enables the Special Education Foundation to offer financial assistance for essential equipment such as augmentative communication devices, adaptive equipment, and adaptive computer equipment.

Applications can be submitted at any time and must be initiated by an SSD professional, with financial need being a key factor in the decision-making process. For more information and assistance, please contact your SSD teacher.
