In a study released earlier this fall, the personal finance website Wallethub ranked the best and worst cities in the U.S. for people with disabilities. With an overall score of 56.00, the St. Louis region ranked third best in the study that compared 182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across three key dimensions: 1) Economy, 2) Quality of Life and 3) Health Care.

The study evaluated those three dimensions using 34 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for people with disabilities.

Minneapolis and Pittsburgh finished just ahead of St. Louis in the rankings.

St. Louis ranked very high in the Quality of Life dimension, which includes:

  • the share of people with disabilities in the region,
  • the number of Special Education teachers per 1,000 school-aged people with disabilities,
  • the graduation rate for students with disabilities,
  • the number pf wheelchair-accessible restaurants and grocery stores,
  • wheelchair-accessible art, entertainment and recreational establishments,
  • wheelchair-accessible trails,
  • the share of population with walkable park access, and
  • the effectiveness of state’s Medicaid programs.

St. Louis also scored well in the health care dimension, but was below the median in category around the economy, which included items such as the employment rate for people with disabilities.

The bottom five cities were Montgomery (AL), Winston-Salem (NC), Tallahassee (FL), Mobile (AL), and Gulfport (MS).
