The Special Education Foundation is proud to announce the final recipients of our 2nd Annual Starfish Awards—individuals who go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with disabilities served by the Special School District (SSD).

These honorees exemplify the spirit of the Starfish Story by creating lasting, positive impact through compassion, dedication, and daily acts of service. Please join us in congratulating these outstanding members of our special education community:

Dr. Germaine Stewart - Leadership Starfish Award, Principal, McCurdy Elementary

With over thirty years of experience, Dr. Stewart has served in nearly every corner of education—as a classroom teacher, School Improvement Facilitator, Teaching and Learning Coach, and District Professional Development Coordinator.

Now principal of McCurdy Elementary, Dr. Stewart is a firm believer that every student deserves a quality education in a supportive, nurturing environment. Her leadership is driven by a deep commitment to helping students, families, and staff grow to their fullest potential. She is a true example of how one dedicated leader can elevate an entire school community.

Stewart is no stranger to the Starfish Story…

Julie Sanders, Teacher - Hancock Place Elementary, Hancock Place School District

Julie Sanders is a seasoned and passionate educator who serves as a classroom teacher and case manager through the Special School District at Hancock Place Elementary. Her nominator describes her as “a bedrock of inspiration, compassion, knowledge, and passion.” Whether through her humor, her wisdom, or her fierce advocacy for students, Julie creates a culture of care and high expectations. She is especially known for her unwavering support of students with the greatest needs.

One student, who once struggled significantly with behavior and academics, found trust and structure in Julie’s care—and by the end of the year, he was proudly writing paragraphs and sharing his work with staff, his smile beaming. Julie believes all students deserve to see themselves reflected positively in the world, and she makes sure they do!

Gail Ross, Paraprofessional - Ackerman School, Special School District

Gail Ross has been a cornerstone of Ackerman School since 1998. For over 20 years, she has managed the school’s Support Room, helping students regulate, restore relationships, and return to learning.

But Gail’s influence stretches far beyond her role—she is a driving force behind community-building events like Ackerman’s annual Black History Program and the founding of the “Diamond Divas,” a social group for middle school girls that promotes confidence, inclusion, and leadership. She organizes staff morale events, crafts inclusive programs, and sees potential in every student—even those others might overlook. Her work is a daily example of compassion in action, and her legacy of care runs deep in the Ackerman community.
