The Special Education Foundation (SEF) excited to announce it’s 2026 Community Starfish Awardees, a celebration of individuals and organizations whose dedication, leadership, and compassion have made a lasting difference in the lives of students with disabilities served by the Special School District of St. Louis County.

Inspired by the “starfish story”—a reminder that one small act can make a meaningful impact—these awards honor those who go above and beyond to create better opportunities, stronger communities, and brighter futures for children and families. SEF will present these three distinct honors at the 3rd Annual Starfish Awards on June 11, 2026: the Leadership Starfish Award, the Spirit of SEF Award, and the Community Starfish Award.

Leadership Starfish Award - Brad & Sara Hagemeyer

The Leadership Starfish Award recognizes individuals who exemplify outstanding leadership in support of students with disabilities. These leaders consistently inspire others, initiate positive change, and champion inclusion within their schools, workplaces, or communities. Whether through mentorship, advocacy, program development, or organizational leadership, recipients of this award demonstrate what it means to lead with integrity, vision, and purpose.

The Leadership Starfish Award is proudly awarded to Brad and Sara Hagemeyer of Custom Coatings.

Custom Coatings has been a valued supporter of the Special Education Foundation for many years.

As longtime friends of the Dan McLaughlin Charity Golf Tournament, their generosity has helped improve the lives of countless students served by the Special School District. Brad, a former SEF board member, has also given years of service as a dedicated tournament co-chair.

Spirit of SEF Award - Laurie Williams

The Spirit of SEF Award honors a person who embodies the heart, values, and mission of the Special Education Foundation. This award celebrates someone who works tirelessly—often behind the scenes—to ensure students have the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive. Recipients of the Spirit of SEF Award are dedicated partners who consistently show up, lift others, and help advance the foundation’s work in meaningful and lasting ways.

The Spirit of SEF Award goes to Laurie Williams, Director Emerita of the Special Education Foundation.

Laurie is one of SEF's founders and had served on the SEF Board of Directors for decades. A retired teacher and administrator from the Ritenour School District, her leadership and frontline impact in education make her an ideal recipient of the Spirit of SEF Starfish Award.

Community Starfish Award - Dr. Daniel Cuneo

The Community Starfish Award is presented to a community member, business, or organization that has made a significant impact through collaboration, generosity, and commitment to students with disabilities. This award acknowledges those who embrace the belief that strong communities are built on compassion and shared responsibility. By investing time, resources, and support, honorees help make a measurable difference in the lives of students and families throughout St. Louis County.

The Community Starfish Award is proudly presented to Dr. Daniel Cuneo, Vice President of the Special School District’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Cuneo has served on the Special School District Board of Education since 2000, representing Subdistrict 2, which includes Affton, Bayless, Hancock Place, and Mehlville.

He has held multiple leadership roles, including Board President (2021, 2024) and Vice President (2025). Before retiring, he spent 24 years with the Illinois Department of Mental Health and conducted mental fitness evaluations for state and federal agencies. A tireless advocate for SSD students, Dr. Cuneo’s commitment to improving children’s lives is truly exceptional.

We are still accepting nominations for the Special Education Foundation’s Starfish Awards now through December 19. We look to honor and individual, educator, leader, volunteer, or community partner within the Special School District and its 22 partner districts who is making a meaningful difference for students with disabilities. Submit your nomination today and help us shine a light on those who go above and beyond.
