Celebrate the Power of Education— American Education Week is Here!

In many ways, the Special Education Foundation exists to celebrate the importance of education and recognize the contributions of educators, school staff, and the entire Special School District community. However, there’s one week every year that celebrates that idea across the country, and this is the week!

Celebrated during the third full week of November each year, American Education Week is dedicated to schools, families, and communities coming together to support education. It underscores the value of a quality education and the necessity for collaboration among teachers, parents, and the community to ensure student success.

This week-long observance serves as an opportunity to highlight the vital role of education in shaping the future and creating opportunities for students of all ages.

The National Education Association (NEA) first established American Education Week in 1921. It has since been celebrated annually to honor the importance of education and the contributions of those who support the educational process.

This week serves as a reminder that education is a shared responsibility, involving teachers, parents, students, and the community working together to provide the best learning opportunities.

Participating in American Education Week is a meaningful way to show appreciation for educators and promote the value of education. Your involvement can make a difference.

  • Thank an Educator: Express your gratitude to teachers, school staff, and education professionals who have made a positive impact on your life or your child’s life.
  • Visit Schools: Arrange visits to local schools to learn about the educational programs and initiatives in your community.
  • Participate in Parent-Teacher Conferences: Attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss your child’s progress and education goals.

  • Support Education Initiatives: Get involved in local education initiatives, such as school improvement projects or literacy programs.
  • Advocate for Education: Your voice matters. Advocate for policies and funding that support quality education in your community and beyond.
  • Engage in Education Discussions: Join discussions on education topics and attend educational seminars or workshops.

One more way to support our incredible SSD educators directly is to donate to the Special Education Foundation’s Classroom Innovation Grants program.

Your support ensures that innovative, vital projects don't stall, preventing educators from having to use their own hard-earned dollars to pay for classroom necessities and creative learning tools.
