Building Confidence, Friendships, and Family Balance Through Camp

This season we highlight the Special Education Foundation’s Kid-to-Camp program — a vibrant opportunity to support students served by the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD) during academic breaks. The program not only opens doors for students to attend camps, but also gives families an invaluable opportunity—a moment of pause, recharge and hope.

What is the Kid-to-Camp Program?

  • The program offers financial assistance (camperships) so students in SSD-served programs can attend day or overnight camps during winter break and other academic breaks in the school year.
  • Applications are now open for Winter Break and are accepted year-round for other school-year breaks.
  • Eligibility: families may apply one time per calendar year
  • The assistance is need-based (financial need and student benefit) and covers camps offering social, educational, and recreational opportunities.

Benefits for the Child: Growth, Connection & Confidence

Sending a student to camp isn’t “just fun” — it provides real, evidence-based benefit for children with disabilities. Camp environments support social interaction and friendship building. Kids engage with peers in structured activities, which fosters a sense of belonging.

They promote independence and self-confidence. Whether a child is choosing an activity, practicing new skills, or navigating camp routines, these small steps add up. Camps designed for inclusive or adapted environments emphasize ability rather than disability, helping children see, and be seen, as capable and valued.

They maintain momentum between school sessions — avoiding the “break slump” and preserving social/emotional growth, exploration, and routine. As SEF notes: “bridging the instructional gap during breaks in the school year is critical.”

“My daughter loved going to the camp! The moment she got there each day she was so excited and we had zero issues with leaving her there. It was awesome!! She is an only child, so the isolation without this camp opportunity would have been detrimental for her over the break.” ~Erica L.

A Note to Families & Partners

If you’re a parent or caregiver of an SSD-served student: please consider this as a meaningful option—not just a “camp fund,” but an investment in your child’s growth and your family’s well-being.

If you’re a teacher, therapist, school leader or advocate: help spread the word! Share the program with families, stress the one-time-per-year eligibility, and encourage early planning so families don’t miss the window for winter break. Learn more about SEF’s Kid-to-Camp program and apply today.
