Grant From The Tilles Foundation Helps Students Bridge the Gap to Adulthood

For nearly ten years, The Tilles Foundation has been partnering with the Special Education Foundation, helping ensure that students with disabilities in St. Louis County can achieve true independence as they transition out of services provided by the Special School District.

Earlier this month, The Tilles Foundation renewed its support of SEF’s Adaptive Equipment program for next year with a generous grant that will assist dozens of students.

For students with disabilities served by the Special School District (SSD) and its partner districts, adaptive and assistive equipment, such as augmentative communication devices, specialized computer equipment, and mobility aids, are essential tools for learning, communication, and daily life.

However, when a student reaches their final year of education with SSD and prepares to enter the world of work or post-secondary life, the adaptive equipment they use at school often stays with the District. This forces students and their families to face the daunting task of acquiring expensive, life-changing equipment as they transition into a new phase of independence.

The grant from The Tilles Foundation is specifically earmarked to address this critical gap. The funds will provide financial assistance to students up to 21 years of age who are completing their final year with SSD to purchase the specialized equipment they need to successfully communicate, work, and manage their lives after graduation.

The Tilles Foundation's mission is to improve the lives of children in the Greater St. Louis area by making innovative, long-term partnerships with non-profit organizations serving disadvantaged youth. The foundation focuses on three main areas: children with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities; K-16 education; and quality-of-life experiences for underprivileged youth. The ultimate goal is to help these children become self-sufficient and contribute to their communities.

Applications Are Open: How to Get Assistance

With this funding now in place, students who have the financial need and are preparing to transition out of the Special School District and need adaptive equipment to ensure their continued success and independence can work with SSD staff to submit applications for assistance through this program.

Who is Eligible?

  • Students up to 21 years of age completing their final year of education with the Special School District (SSD).
  • Funding is based on financial need and aims to enhance the student's independence, education, or quality of life.

How to Apply:

The application process must be initiated by an SSD professional (such as a teacher, therapist, or counselor) who works directly with the student. They will have access to the necessary forms and details.

If you are a parent or family member, please contact your student's SSD teacher or educational professional to start the application process.

Together with partners like The Tilles Foundation, SEF is committed to making sure every student has the tools they need to thrive.
