Last Friday, the 2025 Fred Saigh Leadership Academy (FSLA) completed its first student session, centered on the themes of “Appreciating the Arts” and “What is Leadership.”
The day began with a special behind-the-scenes tour of The Muny, led by Jane Schell, Groups Sales and Community Engagement Manager. The students experienced firsthand how the arts play an important role in community life and how the season comes together each year.
The visit provided a unique perspective on creativity, collaboration, and the power of storytelling—key lessons that also carry into leadership.
Eric McMath of Riverview Gardens, Mario Holmes of Valley Park, and Xavier Kadlec of Parkway South shared their takeaways from the Muny tour.

In the afternoon, guest presenters Mary Dee Schmidt and Dr. Tabari Coleman guided the group through two engaging activities designed to build connection and strengthen leadership skills. The first activity encouraged students to share unique facts about themselves, helping them learn more about one another while highlighting the diversity of experiences they each bring to the Academy. The second activity focused on facilitating conversations as leaders, giving students the opportunity to practice listening, engaging, and leading discussions in meaningful ways.
The students also put their leadership into action during the annual FSLA Car Wash fundraiser. This event is not only a way to give back to the community, but also a key bonding experience for the students as they work together toward a common goal.
Each year, the Academy participants select three charities to receive the proceeds. This year, they chose to support the Little Bit Foundation, Care STL, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital—organizations that make a real difference in the lives of children and families across the region.
