Why Reading Matters—Opening Doors for Students

Many of us can still hear our elementary teachers telling us, “Reading is important!” At the time, it may have felt like just another assignment. But today, we understand just how right they were. Reading isn’t only about books—it’s about opportunity, growth, and independence.

At the Special Education Foundation, we see every day how reading can open doors for students with disabilities. With the right tools and support, reading becomes more than a skill—it becomes a pathway to confidence and success.

Reading Builds Strong Minds

Just like the body needs exercise, so does the brain. Reading stimulates memory, imagination, and critical thinking. For students with disabilities, books (whether printed, digital, or adapted through assistive technology) provide an important way to strengthen focus and practice essential learning skills.

Reading Reduces Stress

School can be challenging, but reading offers an escape. A good story can take a student away from the stresses of the day and into a new world—helping them feel calm, engaged, and ready to learn again.

Reading Improves Focus

In today’s fast-paced world, attention spans are short. But reading teaches patience and concentration by encouraging students to stay with a story from beginning to end. Whether a student is using an audiobook, reading with the help of specialized software, or holding a book in their hands, that practice builds important focus skills.

SEF’s Role in Literacy

At SEF, we are committed to helping students gain independence and confidence through reading. From our Adaptive & Assistive Equipment program that provides audiobooks and specialized devices, to Classroom Innovation Grants that fund creative literacy projects, we make sure teachers and families have the resources they need to help every child discover the joy of reading.

Supporting SSD Teachers
This year, SEF partnered with SSD and Barnes & Noble (B&N) who provided books and resources for Special School District’s new teachers.

The event helped educators start the school year strong, equipping them with tools to inspire a love of reading in their classrooms.
