Giving Back While Heading Back to School

Happy back-to-school season! You can almost feel the excitement in the air—new supplies, crisp shoes, and the buzz of students and teachers preparing for another year of learning. At the Special Education Foundation, this time of year is especially meaningful as we partner with the educators and staff of the Special School District to ensure that students with disabilities have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

Back-to-school isn’t just about getting ready for the classroom—it’s also a wonderful time to give back. Here are a few ways you can make a difference in the lives of students and teachers this year:

Share extra supplies
When shopping for school supplies, consider picking up a few extra items to donate. Many families face financial barriers, and even simple supplies can make a big difference for students with disabilities. Your gift also helps teachers who often reach into their own pockets to support their classrooms.

Support a teacher
Educators in the Special School District go above and beyond every day. A small gesture—like a note of appreciation, a classroom donation, or even volunteering your time—can remind teachers how valued they are in this important work.

Give back while putting money in your pocket: Purchase the Vertical Raise Discount App which proceeds supports educators and students for our Classroom Innovation Grants program.

Show gratitude
A handwritten thank-you note to a teacher, aide, or staff member goes a long way. Recognizing their commitment encourages them and builds the supportive environment our students need.

Provide classroom essentials
Snacks, tissues, wipes, and other classroom basics are always in demand. Supplying these items allows teachers to focus on what matters most: helping students grow in confidence, independence, and learning.

As we begin a new school year, SEF invites you to join us in creating brighter opportunities for children with disabilities. Together, we can ensure that students and teachers have the support they need to succeed—this year and beyond.
