The Special Education Foundation is searching for our next recipients of the John Cary Scholarship, presented by Emerson, for the 2025-2026 school year. This $5,000 scholarship honors the legacy of John Cary, the late superintendent of the Special School District (SSD) of St. Louis County, who dedicated his life to supporting students with disabilities and fostering excellence.

About the John Cary Scholarship

Established in 2016, the scholarship celebrates John Cary’s unwavering commitment to helping students with disabilities overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. It provides financial support to deserving graduating students who receive services from SSD and who demonstrate the qualities Cary admired most: resiliency, courage, and determination.

We caught up with John Cary awardee Mia Magaña, graduate of Oakville High School:

“I’m doing well! the first semester [at Lindenwood University] was hard to adjust to being away from my family and not knowing anyone in the new space. I have quickly adapted into the new environment; however, that didn’t come with some challenges. I have loved my college experience, I wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be able to go to college. Without your help, I would not be able to attend college and be able to help others in nursing.”

Mother of Shayneisha Allen, graduate of Parkway Central High School, also gave us an update:

“Shayneisha has transitioned into Missouri State University very well!  She has joined several organizations on campus and has a solid core group of friends. Her grades are great and she started a part time job!  She's thriving and we thank SEF for the John Cary scholarship!”
