SEF Brings Theater and Music to the SSD Schools

Over the past week, the Special Education Foundation has brought 3 performances to the Special School District schools as part of our SEF Presents! Arts in the Classroom Program.

The students at Ackerman and Litzsinger schools enjoyed the Metro Theater’s performance of “An Unlikely Hero”. In this story, Jordan doesn’t fit in at school and spends every free moment immersed in comic books. A sudden invitation to attend Haven High, a school for superheroes, sends Jordan on a journey of self-discovery.

Litzsinger’s Principal Ms. Kathleen Russ poses with the cast. “We appreciate The Special Education Foundation’s continued support of Litzsinger and we were excited to welcome the Metro Theater Company to Litzsinger!”

This exciting performance will also be touring to Northview High School on November 15.

SEF has also partnered with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ Opera on the Go! which is performing today at Southview School. Students will experience Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1879 comic opera Pirates of Penzance,  discover how music can create a mood, and explore how opera uses the same themes they hear and experience every day in popular music.

These performances are made possible by a grant provided to SEF from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis.  Arts and music programs for children and youth with disabilities offer numerous benefits, including enhanced self-esteem, improved social interaction, and greater language skills. By engaging in creative activities, students often discover hidden talents and gain an increased awareness of the arts, which can significantly boost their confidence.

SEF will continue to support these benefits by providing more performances throughout this school year. We are partnering with the Black Rep, the Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company, the St. Louis Symphony, Jazz St. Louis and more.  Upcoming dates are listed on our website’s Event’s Calendar.  Seating is limited but if you are interested in attending one or more of these upcoming shows, please contact Shannon Benedek, SEF’s Program & Communications Manager at shannon@sef-stl.org or 314-394-7036.
