This week, the Special Education Foundation team, joined by SEF board members and representatives from both Riverview Gardens and Special School District, surprised Shunna Joshua at Michelle Obama Early Childhood Education Center with the news that she is a 2025 Starfish Award winner, making for a truly meaningful and memorable moment for everyone involved.
It was a powerful reminder of why we honor SSD educators and staff like Shunna, whose dedication quietly transforms lives every day.
Shunna Joshua - Paraprofessional at Michelle Obama ECAC - Riverview Gardens School District
Shunna is a devoted teacher’s assistant at Michelle Obama Early Childhood Education Center in the Riverview Gardens School District, and she’s been making a difference in the lives of young learners for over 20 years. Her dedication to students with disabilities is evident in the steady support she offers each day—in the way she fosters trust, builds meaningful connections, and helps create a classroom environment where every child feels valued and understood.
Shunna’s impact has not gone unnoticed—she was nominated for the Starfish Award three times, a rare and powerful testament to the difference she’s made. One of those nominations came from Mary Reich-Hernandez, a fellow educator and 2024 Starfish Award winner, who described Shunna as a steady and compassionate force who gives her all every single day.

“Whether in the role of a para professional or teacher, she exemplifies what it means to work for SSD and represent students with all needs and abilities. Shunna also becomes part of the family, going to charity walks to support her students, and really getting to know the whole family that helps to make up her students. She is caring and patient, even with the most challenging of students. Any child that is part of her classroom is part of her life and will leave ready to change the world.”
