Starfish Awards: Sharing Gratitude and Making a Difference

At the Special Education Foundation, this season of thankfulness is a perfect time to reflect on the countless ways our community makes a difference in the lives of students with disabilities and their families. Whether you are a teacher, support staff, bus driver, paraprofessional,  parent, or donor, your efforts embody the spirit of the Starfish Parable: one act of kindness, one moment of care, can change the world for a special education student.

This philosophy came to life at our inaugural Starfish Awards in June, where we honored remarkable individuals who go above and beyond for students in the Special School District.

Held at CITYPARK Soccer Stadium, the event was a heartwarming celebration of those who quietly create extraordinary impact. Their stories served as powerful reminders that while we cannot help everyone, helping even one student can make all the difference.

Now, as we prepare for the 2nd Annual Starfish Awards in June 2025, we need your help to spotlight more incredible individuals. Do you know someone in the Special School District—a teacher, SSD staff member, or even a general education teacher—who has made an extraordinary difference in the life of a student with disabilities? Nominate them for a Starfish Award!

Submit a Nomination

Nominations are now open, and submitting one is easy. Let’s give these deserving individuals the recognition they have earned and inspire others with their stories of compassion and care.

We are so thankful for the opportunity to honor those who embody the spirit of the Starfish Parable. Together, let’s celebrate the power of making a difference, one student, one act, one life at a time.
